First mobile euthanasia unit 'to be launched next month'

The mobile unit would be the first in the world to carry out assisted suicides when family doctors refused to give patients lethal drugs on ethical grounds. Official figures showed there were 2,700 assisted suicides a year but campaigners said the new unit would mean an extra 1,000 people choosing to die, according to the Daily Mail. The Right to Die Association in the Netherlands said the unit would be the first of six to handle borderline cases in which family doctors decline to help. It is thought it will deal with those with mental illnesses or early dementia. But according to the Federation of Dutch Physicians, some patients who could be treated might end their lives unnecessarily.
